Oman

Oman is a stable country in the Middle East with a varied terrain and climate.

Though much of the country is desert the Hajar Mountain Range near the east coast is only about 50km from Muscat and has lower temperatures — in fact, a Mediterranean climate. For example, the average temperature in March in Muscat is 29°C whereas in Jebel Akhdar it is only 22°C. Jebel Akhdar is the source of agricultural products like pomegranates, walnuts, apricots, grapes, and peaches.

In Muscat try the restaurant Sukoon, Al Mouj, Muscat as recommended by AH in his Live Like a King in Muscat video.

FOOD

From a Mark Wiens YouTube video, Rozna Restaurant is a large, new restaurant that serves local food. For a sweet snack Onami Halwa.

Based on the average temperature chart below the best time to visit Oman is December to March.

Get Your Guide has a half-day guided tour of Muscat.

See the article, "The 14 best places to visit in Oman" from the Broke Backpacker.

From the book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, Nizwa Fort in Nizwa is a must see. Of the 500 forts scattered throughout Oman this is the most visited. It includes a large souk with a vast variety of goods for sale. Also from Mark Wiens, Mutrah Fort is popular along with the Mutrah souk.

ACCOMMODATION

I stayed at Fraser Suites in Seoul and there is one in Muscat that looks amazing. Their One Bedroom Deluxe Suite is considerably larger than the one in Seoul (77 sqm, 829 sq ft), including a separate kitchen and laundry, for $163 per night (based on a 7 night stay)! For $202 per night you can get the same sized suite on a higher level and with a balcony.

Andrew Henderson describes the real estate potential there.

Experience Travel Group describe the best times to go to Oman:

December - February

‘Winter’ in Oman means a very pleasant 20-25°C in Muscat and low humidity. Just take an extra layer for cooler nights up in the mountains. Rainfall is low, with showers most likely in the far northern Musandam Peninsula. Visit during the Muscat Festival for a month-long celebration of Omani culture and heritage. With fabulous weather in Oman in December, it can also be an ideal Christmas break.

March - April

Expect a warm and pleasant climate with temperatures ranging between 25-32°C during the day. Rainfall is very low. During these months the roses are in full bloom in the mountains of Jebel Akhdar - the scent is terrific!

May

May is the transitional month between winter and summer in Oman. Temperatures are climbing steadily, but humidity remains low. This is a month of fruit harvest, with apricots, peaches, pears and figs in abundance.
